As such, I am imagining latkes while out shopping for potatoes to grate up. (Apparently we were all out.)

Sorry I'm a bit late with this post. I was busy.

Is it an important Holiday in the Jewish religion, or is the timing right with Christmas, that it puts Jews in the mood to celebrate too?

Why should Jews only celebrate "important" holidays? I celebrate all Jewish holidays. Maybe not really minor ones like Tu B'Shvat, but I know when it is.

We had Hanukkah long before you had Christmas. Two Centuries before in fact.

Hanukkah commemorates the rededication of the Holy Temple (the Second Temple) in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean Revolt against the Seleucid Empire of the 2nd century BCE.

Part of the Festival of Lights deals with the miracle of the oil. There was only enough to last one night in the menorah yet it lasted 8 nights.

I just saw a parade of cars with Hanukkah candles take over Queens Blvd.

I'm just asking if the celebrations are upped to oppose Christmas. If Christmas wasn't such a big deal, over-celebrated in my opinion, would Jews be as festive?

So I worked Washington Dulles to Seattle yesterday morning. I headed into the streets early afternoon to witness the "Die-In" down at Pike Place Market but things took an unexpected turn. So as I was walking I happened across a temporary carousel right and stopped to watch the parents holding their adorable little children atop the horses but I kept hearing bells ringing in the distance so naturally I could not leave well enough alone and began heading south toward the sound. So like I found the source near the corner of Union and 2nd and it was not the carolers I suspected but the Salvation Army. I was about to throw a couple large into the tiller before heading back to the site of the "Die-In" along the waterfront when, lo and behold, a couple young Progressive Democrats who were trying to pass themselves off as Pearl Jam or Alice in Chains or Soundgarden band worshippers passed by and yelled at the Salvation Army man something about being a war criminal as if he was a member of the uniformed military service. My response was as follows: "Was that necessary?" and the guy in the woolen cap with the drawstrings hanging down told me to quote f--- off unquote at which time I proceeded to call him a coward since he and his partner kept walking away. So the loser in the cap turned around and started to walk up to me in an ill advised attempt to intimidate but I had none of it and saw him for what he was... a clown. So instead of backing down I began to approach him to hopefully escalate the situation into a physical confrontation right when his partner grabbed him by the arm to stop him from getting messed up. I knew he was afraid of me because the fear in his eyes was unmistakable. That place needs to get a grip and stop being so f---ing paranoid already.

We had Hanukkah long before you had Christmas

Ever read Jeremiah 10:3-5? Even in the JPS version? There's gotta be some familiarity there with a certain modern-day custom.

Chanukah is not a biblical holiday and therefore, fairly minor. It is a bigger deal in the US and Canada than in other places because of its proximity to Christmas. Gift-giving on Chanukah is pretty much a North American tradition that is not widely followed (and certainly isn't followed in terms of the scale of the gifts) anywhere else.

The use of a tree is drawneth from ancient Pagan rituals as referreth to in the passages.

However the term Christmas and the specific celebration of the birth of Yeshua (that was Jesus' given name before the Romans latinized it) did not come to pass until after his death.

For what it is worth there have been unofficial Chanukkah bushes.

Long after Yeshua's death (and in the Greek text, it is Ιησούς, where Latin Iesus comes from). There's nothing in any of what is called the New Testament that prescribes observation of his birthday.

Since Chunakah has become "Jewish Christmas", we now need a Jewish St. Patrick's Day.

I like that.

Now Jewish industry leaders need to get with the entertainment and booze establishment and have that otherwise minor holiday go national along the lines of Cinco de Mayo, St Paddy's and Mardi Gras.

It'd be a boon for the otherwise non-existent national market for kosher wine and other drinks.
