Looting is making your voice heard?

Posted by Dave on Sat Nov 22 07:47:40 2014

Brian Curtis, 24, knows exactly what he thinks should happen if Officer Wilson is not indicted. It would mean that peaceful protests were not working, he said, and that a more assertive, even violent, approach was necessary.

“I’m following the crowd,” Mr. Curtis said. “If we don’t get no justice, we got to start taking matters into our own hands. They want to go loot, we can go do that. They want to break stuff out, we can go do that, too. Something got to be done to make our voices heard.”

The same article has this conveniently ignored quote.

Much of the talk, on the street and online, about confronting police officers is just empty boasting, several young men said. Time and again, Mr. Davis said, he has heard people come into his barbershop warning that things will get out of control. But, he said, he has not heard one person say he will actually partake in violence.

Didn't know that making one's voice heard is a goal in and of itself. Lions make their voice heard when they break the necks of farmers's sheep; is that what these people mean?

That one man don't represent every black person in Ferguson.

“No matter what the grand jury decides, I do not want my son’s death to be in vain — I want it to lead to positive change,” a very somber Brown says in a public service announcement released late Thursday. “I thank you for lifting your voices to end racial profiling and police intimidation, but hurting others or destroying property is not the answer.”

Just like the exposé video where somebody visits a campus to interview "random" people, the single-person comment that supposedly represents more than his/her own opinion has lost effectiveness and should be given no weight other than "that's what that one guy said". :D

You weren't going to try to say that looting is not a significant part of such "peaceful" protest marched, were you?

I see that there are all sorts of views about what constitutes legitimate protest. Some I believe are defensible even though I disagree with them, while some, like the view expressed by the original quote in this thread, are highly reprehensible.

Dave chose a single quote out of an entire article that quoted a wide range of views. I consider that to be cherry picking. It implies the view is widespread, while the article, whether accurate or not, says no such thing.

As usual, you totally miss the point. Seriously, the view looking out with your head up your ass must be very boring, seeing the same thing all the time.

First paragraph: "When protests broke out here after the police shooting of an unarmed black teenager in August, James Bass knew he had to hit the streets. His father lived in Ferguson, he lived close by, and like many young black men in the St. Louis area, Mr. Bass wanted his voice to be heard."

Second paragraph: "Amid the chaos of tear gas and police orders to disperse one night, Mr. Bass, 22, was trying to get away from the crowd, only to find officers chasing him, he said, and ordering him to the ground. He spent that night in jail. He was released only after he called his manager at the swimming pool company where he worked, who in turn got the company’s owner to post Mr. Bass’s roughly $500 bond."

The person talking about looting is "Brian Curtis, 24, knows exactly what he thinks should happen if Officer Wilson is not indicted. It would mean that peaceful protests were not working, he said, and that a more assertive, even violent, approach was necessary."

Now how is that helping James Bass get his voice heard? That's what I was referring to.
