Linux Fail

I tried Sabayon, Ubuntu, and Mint. All in Virtual Box.

Sabayon = no GUI. It installs, it boots, it automatically logs in as root with a command prompt.

Ubuntu = Virtual Box is trapping it at 640 x 480 display only it hasn't figured that out making half the screen inaccessible.

Mint = Works. Gonna take some time playing with it. Hardware acceleration doesn't work properly in Virtual Box.

Also, as long as I was experimenting...

Darwin = doesn't boot. Hangs halfway through. Not entirely unexpected, since it's an old version of Darwin that doesn't support most modern machines anyway. I haven't tried PureDarwin yet.

OK so apparently the Sabayon iso was corrupted. That might explain stuff? Will try again...

Creationist didn't boot, I just got an error message saying it couldn't find the kernel.

According to the documentation, the kernel is called "God" but it didn't come with the install image and I can't find it anywhere.

Sounds like a funky monitor/video card that Virtual Box doesn't know. Video cards and wifi cards are the bane of KNOS coding. So many non-standards, so many custom bits of driver code that has to be written to make them work.

Heh. That's why I have to hand it to Nvidia, who - last I heard - provided a driver in a binary blob which actually works. And why, for years, I giggled at the people working on the open source ATI driver who poo-poo'ed binary blobs, saying they'll have something working soon, any time now, for cards that were a generation or 2 old. Yeah, you go ahead and have your brand-new card sitting in its box for 6 months to a year, while I stick in my Nvidia card and have it work the same day.

Then again, I haven't had to change out my video card in years, so perhaps the ATI/AMD people got their act together.

Yep ... that's your Linux people for you. :(

"got to be free ... free software, free everything, why do you charge for KNOS?" OK, give me a house, give me a car and that's a nice cheeseburger you have there, thanks. Hey! Wait a minute! That's MINE! Exactly. :)

One of the primary reasons why we built on BSD is that under the BSD license, proprietary is perfectly fine. So is non-disclosure agreements if someone gives us code to include. We don't HAVE to give that away if it belongs to somebody else.

Nah ... just dumbasses that actually believe that since Windows came with the computer, it must be free and therefore everything else should be too. They never understood the "Microsoft tax" that can turn a $200 computer into a $600 computer since that was never itemized.

Linux' biggest problem is no hierarchy, no discipline, no head chef. Anarchy is no way to build reliability, but that's Linux. The new "systemd" mess is a perfect example of all indians, no chief. :(
