I remember Jean Shepard well. I used to listen to show every night with my little Sears transistor radio under my pillow so my parents could hear it (school the next day).

Sadly before he died, Jean turned on radio, hated what it degenerated to, corperate entities that was more concerned with the bottom line rather than quality broadcasting. Swore that he would never appear on radio again. He kept his word.

Remember he used to tell people to go around and say "Flick Lives"?
Well, I went to a Catholic high school and someone wrote Flick Lives on a locker door. The L and I were printed close to gether and it looked more like "FU*K Lives" than FLICK Lives. The whole floor got detention for a week since nobody would admit to the deed!

On my notebook, I have Internet Explorer. Came with it, already installed.

I don't know how to, or if I can install another browser. I'm also not sure how much memory I have. I'm not at the nuts and bolts level of computer knowledge (yet).

I have a Toshiba NB 505 notebook - got it January 2011, I don't know how long it's been on the market. I took it out, read the simple "get started" instructions and have been using it ever since.

I did go over to the public library and use their PC's - they've got Mozilla Firefox. It's a county wide system (Suffolk, NY), so it's apps are probably quite extensive, and their operating system must be at the same level corporations use.

Anyway, on their system, I tried what Terrapin Station suggested, dragging the tiny little square up to the URL address line, and it worked. The image came right up, and apparently remained in your post, since I cliced to other posts and then returned tot your earlier one, and the inage was still there.

Once the cache gets loaded with the image, it will remain there. Until you clear the cache. Issue though is that the sites want a direct visit to display the image, if you link to it without visiting the site (and get a COOKIE from it) then you're an unwelcome bandwidth stealer to the admins who write the code for those pages because they didn't get paid for the ad or malware their advertisers provided.

That's how it works. IE is dumb as a box of bowing balls, and just as unsafe. Firefox is only slightly better, as is Gooble Chrome. Check out Midori, an up and coming SAFE browser ... we recommend it and it's in the next upcoming version of KNOS. Pale Moon browser is also something to look into if you like the whole Firefox look and feel.

re: "or malware their advertisers provided." advertisers provided?

I thought that maleware, was a purposely intrusive program whose function is to screw up or slow down your PC, either just to be schmucky, like a virus, or it infects / slows down your PCr in order to istall intrusive, hacking programs of its own that your PC will infect other PC's with.

Also how versatile are some of the new browsers you mentioned, in their ability to access any kind of attachments or links that may use different formats or apps (don't know more precise words for these) to make the attachment or link accessible.

I ask, because I was at the library's PC doing an on-line application. One of the tests I just couldn't access. It gave a help number. I called it, we tried a bunch of things that didn't work to access it. I told him the library's browser was Firefox, he said it may be accessible only by Internet Explorer.

That's exactly what the problem was. I went home, brought up the on-line test site, on my notebook, with IE, and was able to access the attachment.

Also, as a user, I don't see what the difference is between IE and Firefox, to me they both pretty much are doing the same thing. I asked the computer tech. at the library about the difference. All he told me was that Firefox was more powerful and faster.

The front cover picture was sold back in the day as a large poster maybe 3 & 1/2' by 2&1/2' (yes, Nigel that's feet not inches!). Personality posters they were called.

I had that poster up on the wall of my rrom freshman year, fall '68; along with a similarly large poster of Cream.

That's pretty much what malware is, but websites can exploit glitches in your operating system or browser or any related software to install malware on your PC without you even knowing it.

And they can exploit innocent websites by purchasing ad space on those sites to run their malicious code— when you visit a website, the ads come off a remote server, so they're basically like mini-websites of their own. The owner of the site you visit has no knowledge or control over what ads are displayed, so a Russian hacker can infect your PC through an ad on the New York Times website.

Quite possible that both machines got infected. LEGITIMATE attachments will work. Malware will PRETEND not to work, but hit the mark anyway. Windows users are so used to things going sideways on them that they never give a second thought to something that they click on that doesn't work. In most cases, yeah it did, but not what you expected it to do. :(

That'why we built KNOS back in 2007.
