"Why everybody is moving to Texas"

Lots of liberals making Austin the state's fastest-growing city?

CNN Money

Why everybody is moving to Texas

By Les Christie
September 29, 2014: 8:20 AM ET
More Americans moved to Texas in recent years than any other state: A net gain of more than 387,000 in the latest Census for 2013. And Austin was the fastest growing major city.

Jobs is the No. 1 reason for population moves, with affordable housing a close second.

"It take two things to draw people inland in big numbers: jobs and housing affordability," said Nela Richardson, chief economist for the real estate broker Redfin.

Texas and other heartland states have two advantages that translate into affordable housing: Plenty of cheap land around cities and easy regulations that enable developers to build quickly.

Nine of the top 10 fastest growing U.S. metro areas last year were ones where homes were more affordable than the U.S. average, according to Redfin. Many were in Texas, Oklahoma, Utah and other heartland states.

Five Texas cities — Austin, Houston, San Antonio, Dallas and Fort Worth — were among the top 20 fastest growing large metro areas.

Some smaller Texas metro areas grew even faster. In oil-rich Odessa, the population grew 3.3% and nearby Midland recorded a 3% gain.

Jobs was the main driver in Austin, where population rose by 2.6% between 2012 and 2013. That's nearly four times faster growth than the United States as a whole.

Jobs are plentiful in Austin, where the unemployment rate is just 4.6%. Moody's Analytics projects job growth to average 4% a year through 2015.

Just as important, many jobs there are well paid: The median income of more than $75,000 is nearly 20% higher than the national median. The median home price is $243,000, higher than the U.S. norm, but a price level that income can support.

During the boom years, population actually grew faster in high-priced markets like New York and San Francisco.

Rapid price gains made buyers less concerned about overpaying for homes. Plus, they had banks lining up to lend them money.

Once rapid home price jumps were taken out of the equation, affordable housing markets with strong economies became even more attractive to people looking to relocate.

Lack of medical benefits could be an issue for people on welfare and/or Medicaid. Is that you? I think you told us a couple of weeks ago you are in Medi-Cal, which is a Medicaid HMO.

University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is considered the second best in the nation, according to the new rankings in U.S. News & World Report. Texas Children's Hospital is ranked number 2 for pediatric cardiology and heart surgery, and neonatology.

not so fast...... all the doctors are < a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2014/09/29/us/costs-can-go-up-fast-when-er-is-in-network-but-the-doctors-are-not.html?ref=health">”out of network" so you better be prepared to pay up, and FAST, since texas only allows thirty days before they seize any and all assets you may have. Andersen is good for a few select cancers, but there's just as good to find in most other level 1 cancer centers. And Dave doesn't seem to understand what these centers are, who they treat and what it takes to be accepted into a care program. They don't just treat anyone.

Add to that the fact that your kids will get a substandard public school education, and the government there is still seeking to CUT its funding.

Let's not forget the big bugs, fire ants, horrid weather, drought and then the's the climate.

Texas is nowhere near paradise.

Nineties??? Yow, what kind of power bills are temps like that gonna run? I'd drop dead from the heat living with that day after day. Plus you're in a drought. Which means limited showering. Which means....severe ripeness to put it politely.

Up here it's been high seventies, low eighties low humidity, windows open, fans at night, no AC. Love this time of year here. One more thing, the reservoirs are FULL.

ROTFL! You should go into comedy, you're pretty funny. In a stupid sort of way, that is.

Relatively low humidity here so we don't even break a sweat at these temps. We're used to it. No restrictions on showering but we do limit outdoor watering to 2x per week. In South Texas, e.g., Houston, they're near the Gulf so they get the humidity.

Now when you're up to your keesters in snow, we're still in the 50's. It's difficult for you to keep warm in that cold but you're so full of shit that you can burn it all night long to keep your house warm.

LOL!

Tell me again how many people are moving to your spot on the road?

Too cold? Could you be any more ignorant if you tried?

Average lows for Houston in December and January are the mid-40's. Average highs are the upper 60's. For Ft. Worth for those months it's the upper 30's for lows and the upper 50's for highs. Heating costs are negligible. I live in a 2600 s.f. house and I paid $71 in December and $92 in January to heat my home.

That's too cold for you? Shows you're a pussy!

Yes true. "Due to high taxes, burdensome regulations, lack of public sector reforms, and a lackluster job climate, more people have left California than come to the state since 2005, according to a comprehensive study by the Manhattan Institute released on Tuesday, suggesting California is no longer “perceived by most Americans as the land where dreams come true.”
