Saw that, was amused. Neither got to their destination either. :)

I think Newburgh is closed ... heh. I imagine he'd break out the yellow shoe slipper and go to town back there to the applause of the entire tube. :)

Given that this is an issue people have strong preferences about, it should be possible to book a seat in a non-reclining section of an aircraft. Easy $20 for an airline to make.

Charge the idiot with the devices designed to prevent the reclining of the seat in front of him with tampering with an airliner.

Only two U.S. airlines (Spirit and I think, Allegiant) use non-reclining seats. Some airlines use limited or non-reclining seats in front of the emergency rows.

Speaking of Cortelyounext, I read on the airliners.net board that UA is trying out an EWR-SRQ (Sarasota) flight early next year

It will be on a 737 (the post specifically mentions 738, but I'm sure UA would sub a 739 or 73G if necessary), so I bet he'd be all over that to avoid those dangerous TECO stacks near TPA :)

Airlines use it because there are regulations on the minimum amount of space next to the exit door so by having limited or no recline seats in the row in front of the exit row the airline can give a full row of seats in the exit row. Otherwise they have to take out the window seat

Having traveled coach all my life, I can tell you that sets recliners are the bane of the existence of air travelers of modest means. I once flew to Israel seated behind a pregnant woman who set her recliner back all the way as soon as she sat down. I'm 6 foot 1 - by the time I got off the plane 9 hours later, I needed a chiropractor.

Me pet peeve!

I like that idea, kew. They already have the extra legroom seats for additional cost, so why not have seats where the seat on front of you doesn't recline.

I had a problem like this many years ago (pre-9/11) on a flight from LAX to OGG. The people in back of us would pound on the back of our seats if we tried to recline. There was a big argument and they ended up moving my wife and I to different seats (not together!), The Hawaiian police met all of us when we landed but no one was detained.

I have long legs for someone 5'11" and I have never had a problem with the person in front of me reclining.

I'm about the same hight and also have long legs, and have only (politely) asked someone not to recline during meal times - it's not a problem otherwise. If the seat is designed to recline, the individual occupying it has an absolute right to recline - it's included in the price paid for the seat.

This case happens to be particularly egregious since the passengers in question were in the "economy plus" section, where there's extra legroom to begin with. Preventing another passenger reclining so as to have even more legroom was just being greedy.

Even in Economy Minus the airline prohibits the use of the item and therefore the failure of the passenger to remove it when asked is interference with the flight crew, a federal crime. The passenger throwing the water was also in the wrong too. She could have politely notified the Flight Attendant

I recently had an incident on a flight where the woman in front of me insisted on reclining the seat in front of me for her young child (probably about 4 years old) a few minutes after we took off on a redeye. I asked her to move the seat up slightly since the fully reclined seat jammed my legs and she immediately summoned the flight attendant. When the FA came, she said I could be relocated to an Economy Plus seat on the aisle but it was the row in front of an exit row so it had no recline (I was originally assigned to a non-Economy Plus aisle). I took the offer, already having been separated from my traveling companion, but was quite worked up and didn't sleep well on the flight. I fly fairly often and I've never had anyone refuse that request before, though I may have been more defensive of my space on that flight since on a flight a few days earlier, a customer of size in the window seat spilled over in to the middle seat and that passenger spilled in to my space. I didn't say anything before we took off and was quite uncomfortable by the end of the flight.

I read that airlines have not reduced the degree of recline as they've moved the seats closer together. They should reduce or eliminate recline, otherwise, these incidents are bound to continue happening. From now on, I will buy extra legroom seating on flights that offer it of a shorter duration as a result of my recent incident (my threshhold for purchasing it was previously much higher), but something needs to be done about the fact that with the current setups, there isn't enough room, even for average sized travelers.

El Al has more seat pitch than most airlines, even in economy. It makes a world of difference.

The person in front of me may have the "right" to recline, but they do not have the right to jam in to or otherwise injure my knees. The fault here ultimately lies with the airlines for creating this situation, not with me or the person in front of me who wishes to recline but can't because my knees are in the way.

Just because they have the right to recline does not mean they should ignore common sense/common courtesy. I'll usually look behind me before I recline to make sure I'm not going to slam into some unsuspecting soul's knees.

BTW, the situation is generally much better if there's nothing under the seat in front of you - I find it possible to then stretch my legs/feet into that space, thereby lowering the hight and angle of my legs and avoiding being hit by a reclining seat.
