What Happens When Police Officers Wear Body Cameras |
|
Posted by Fred G on Tue Aug 19 19:28:00 2014 WSJ ArticleIn the first year after the cameras' introduction, the use of force by officers declined 60%, and citizen complaints against police fell 88%. One problem with the cameras, however, has been cost. Fortunately, fierce competition between the two most prominent vendors of the devices, Vievu LLC and Taser International Inc., TASR +9.74% which makes the cameras used by Rialto police, has driven the price of individual cameras down to between $300 and $400. Unfortunately, one place where expenses can mount is in the storage and management of the data they generate. They've got money for heavy armored vehicles and other military gear and this would IMO pay for itself in legal cost savings. your pal, Fred |

I was talking to our sheriff last Saturday, an old buddy. The OFFICIAL SWATWAGENS (Humvees) cost as much as $360k. That's what he was trying to get money to buy until one of his buddies in Syracuse happened upon 16 MRAPs that the military was surplusing. He got HIS for $5k and dropped another ONEk in finishing off for a total cost to Albany county taxpayers of just 6k total. The DOWNSIDE of these toys though is their "gas" mileage. :( |

Ummmmm ... it isn't a Humvee, it's an MRAP ... I posted a picture of it late Saturday night. But I fed it from my phone directly to tinypic and don't have time left to go do it again and threw away the URL I got. It's here though, I promise. Gotta get up at oh-dark hundred - have to work United States time this week for customers instead of my usual Middle East/western Asia schedule. If you can find it, feel free to copypasta again. :) |

I thought that was kind of expensive for a Humvee. MRAP makes more sense."The OFFICIAL SWATWAGENS (Humvees) cost as much as $360k." |

That was NOT a Humvee that I posted ... go look. I'd go find it but I *seriously* gotta get to bed. Early day tomorrow, Selkirk does America ... a Mike Judge picture. :)And no, a fully equipped Humvee police vee-hickle costs $360,000 with all the trimmings according to my buddy. He got a quote. |

I still think these things would pay for themselves in saved administrative and court costs as they're a reliable eyewitness.Your pal, Fred |

The Humvees still ran $360K. The MRAP satisified the Homeland Security requirement for backup materiel held locally should a Fed agency want it. The thing sits in the garage unless they show it somewhere or have the occasional GCM to impress it gets gallons to the mile, costs too much to use. Definitely a vehicle for an oil company army. Useless otherwise. |
