Seattle mayor wants $15/hour city minimum wage

If Seattle was dead before, it'll be deader now. And the city's socialist city council member wants inflation-pegged yearly increases on top of the $15/hour minimum.

KIRO CBS 7 Eyewitness News

Seattle Mayor set to announce $15 minimum wage plan

By Essex Porter
Updated: 2:39 p.m. Thursday, April 24, 2014 | Posted: 8:34 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, 2014
Seattle Mayor Ed Murray has scheduled a news conference for Thursday to announce a plan to raise the city’s minimum wage to $15 an hour.

Murray made the decision after the Income Inequality Committee he appointed missed Wednesday's deadline for reaching a consensus on a plan.

“There has not at this point been a final agreement, there have been a lot of good talks, people coming closer together,” said committee member and Seattle City Council member Nick Licata.

Committee members representing business and labor could not agree on issues like crediting tips and benefits against the $15 minimum. And council member Kshama Sawant revealed another hurdle — she said there has been little talk of automatically increasing the minimum wage with inflation.

“If going forward the new minimum wage does not have a cost of living increase attached to it every year of the phase in it's not going to work out, Sawant said.

The statewide minimum wage does rise automatically with inflation.

But Thursday morning, committee co-chair Howard Wright told KIRO 7's John Knicely that the group planned to have its proposal to the mayor by noon. The mayor's news conference was scheduled for 1:15 p.m., but was later pushed back to 3 p.m. On Thursday afternoon, Wright said the committee was still working on an agreement for the recommendation.

Wright said his understanding is if the committee has a recommendation ready before the news conference, the mayor will present that instead of his own.

Seattle isn't dead now. I doubt this will pass but if it does it won't hurt business there that hugely.

You know what sucks more than making minimum wage? Being unemployed. But I guess you could bear waiting in line for a longer period of time for your morning latte.....you know, for the poor.

We never hear the followup to raising the minimum wage, like all those Subways in San Francisco that shuttered or even laid off so many workers.

One study suggests raising the minimum wage has no effect on employment

Another study seems to agree

LOL studies.

We've already seen the effect in SF just from $10.24/hour minimum wage. If you want to deny it, go right ahead, but it won't change reality.

Boo-F&#$*ng-Hoo. I don't need slave labor to keep my sandwiches cheap. Besides, it's not like someone is going to drive down to San Jose just to save a buck on a BMT.

What does it cost now, if not $5? $6?

More importantly, the studies look at the economy and employment, not just whether a sandwich is cheap. The claim was made that it reduces employment and the studies contradict that.

Fred

Employment's leaving CA in droves in general. Did the "studies" account for that? SF's barely hanging on because of the tech employment that they encourage to stay via may concessions. Not mentioned in the study on SF, which is using outdated data.

We're studying the effect of raising the min wage. Of course there are other economic factors that affect employment but these studies had foci.

If "we" includes the founder of the "Union for Radical Political Economics" (and it does), then one has to question the level of bias in the studies.

I guess they figure if you're dumb enough to pay $5 for a fast food sandwich, then you're dumb enough to pay $6. That's hardly the economic catastrophe the aristocrats keep banging on about.
