Nice to know that Conservatives know what's actually going on over their from their faux news. There is no cold war, there will be no shooting, and this was all posturing to ensure that the Russian fleet in Crimea will remain after the new government is formed. Once that happens, Ukraine will allow the Russians to keep their fleet intact in Sevastopol. Russia has no interest in occupying Ukraine. They just want to be sure that their port remains available. |

Heard it directly from my buds in Ukraine last night. Parliament started off by saying, "We are NOT at war, calm down. Go to your stove. Is there gas? If we were at war, there wouldn't be." Ukrainians have a way with words. :)It's posturing ... Russia wants a permanent agreement that Sevastopol be sorta like Guantanamo is for us from whatever the new Ukrainian government is that forms. This was all done to ensure that they agree to it. Ukraine has no problem agreeing to that so I'm told. So once they have their elections, this'll be over. |

Here's an interesting opinion piece.I suspect the author has a hidden agenda, so I would take it all with many barrels of salt, but it is interesting. I've also wondered, why doesn't Ukraine jettison Crimea to get rid of all those pro-Russian voters. |

Dividing Ukraine would certainly solve the political problems, but then again as much as folks in the north and south consider ditching each other, that's not going to happen either.Right now, they have economic issues to solve and they need both parts in order to do that. |

OK ... finally got to reading the article, and he's largely right about the local political landscape there, as well as Putin's APPARENT intentions. Ukraine's political realities are very complicated because of both Russian as well as European ethnicity there. It's a potentially volatile mix but the one thing that HAS worked for Ukraine has been "we're all Ukrainian here" in the end.I also agree that for better or worse, Ms. Tymoshenko will be restored (she's had her own issues, but Yanukovych tossing her in jail gave her back more cred than she deserves) as about the only figurehead that can work with all sides. But as to Crimea, it was a gift from Krushchev, and it's now an inseparable part of Ukraine. Putin knew this which is why he knew he could pull what he did in order to get their attention. The original interim government was so pissed off over what Yanukovych did that they overreacted, thus where we ended up. The US and EU can "bargain" all they want, but it won't make any difference to Ukraine. They need to work this out themselves and cooler heads are already prevailing from what I hear from my guys there. |
