THis is truly a very sad day for NYC.
We unfortunately just elected a mayor & public advocate from the working families party. Bill DeBlasio's politics are to the left of David Dinkins.
I cannot beleive for a minute that voters who put Mike Bloomberg in office three times changed course 180 degrees and went for de Blasio.
THis man was polling 4th in the summer. Then Weiner imploded and Christine Quinn was viewed as Bloomberg lite. Thompson's campaign never took off and John Liu had too many scandals. This paved the way for DeBlasio.

I will try and find something positive out of this.
I am proud of his Italian heritage, I am VERY pleased he had his victory party in Brooklyn and I am pleased he lives in Brooklyn as well.

Hopefully he will not be as radical and he will care about keeping the city clean, safe and provide jobs for all New Yorkers.

Whether you like it or believe it or not, it's true. The electorate has gradually changed. But still, a lot of people who voted for the Giuliani or Bloomberg candidate in each of the last 5 elections in which they voted at all clearly voted for DeBlasio over Lhota.

"Joe Lhota was clearly the better choice."

Joe Lhota has ZERO PERSONALITY from the start. He constantly used FEAR and RACE to move his campaign and he lost. He would have won if he were more solid in his plans for the future of NYC but he gave none in the end. He failed as a leader. Even towards the end, you could tell he has NO CLUE about the various people and the ethnic neighborhoods that make up NYC.

I would have to disagree. He was simply pointing out facts & quite frankly, I do have fear. With regards to personality, I wold have to agree, with regards to varous peope in ethnic neighborhoods, I do not know. I would think living in Brooklyn Heights which is a diverse progressive community which is near other more diverse communities, he would have more of an understanding. The fact is Governor Cuomo appointed him to run the MTA and Governor Cuomo has more in common with him with regards to taxes. I personally think NYC is a better place in 2013 than it was in 1993. I want to see it continue, I do not want to see it go back. I do not want to see highways covered in graffiti and the graffiti removal units eliminated because our new mayor views this vandalism as art and expression. I want the subways to remain safe enough for my daughter to take home from school.

From what I read about him he had no plans for the city. There was nothing to vote FOR. OTOH, deBlasio DID offer plans and people responded positively. Seems there's a positive mood all about the city now. That's the first and foremost good a good leader brings. Finding the way to motivate a population is the first sign of a good leader.

His plans were simply to build upon the successes of Mike Bloomberg.
Unfortunately what Bill DeBlasio has offered is not possible.
I am totally in agreement with keeping hospitals open especially LICH but how will that be done? I am in favor of good public education for all students, again how is this possible? His record as a councilman and public advocate were abysmal. How did he lead? If he was such a great leader, then why not be at the top or near the top during primary season. I will agree however that the mood is apparently upbeat. Unfortunately I believe it will be a very short honeymoon, I hope I am wrong.

And what facts are those? There really so no way things could go back to the way it was. That would be foolish for anyone who is mayor.

As for your FEAR...you're just paranoid of the future. Are you afraid of gang warfare or something? or race riots? ro something? spill your guts out NOW.

"......new mayor views this vandalism as art and expression. "

That just plain FOOLISH.

"I want the subways to remain safe enough for my daughter to take home from school."

That all depends on the amount of cops patroling the beat in the subways.

Valid responses but I am a firm beleiver in policies that have proven effective regarding public safety. I do not know how the new mayor's and new police commissioner's policies will be effective in keeping us safe. I'm not so sue about the vandalsim issue. THere used to be several anti-graffiti trucks removing highway graffiti regularily, that program was scaled back under Mke Bloomberg, I honestly do not know what DeBlasio will do in this regard.
In order to not raise taxes to high and to negotiate contracts with retroactive pay increases, who knows how we will be able to maintain and add to the current ranks of the NYPD.

Bushwick, Greenpoint, Harlem, Long Island City, Crown Heights.
I unfortunately do not know of any improvements in Brownsville. In E NY they did build Gateway Plaza mall and were trying to add a walmart which was defeated due to opposition. I beleive he did add more units of affordible housing in E NY but I am not sure. I do know that E NY did get a multiplex on Linden Blvd back in the late 1990's.

Good points, I never said he was perfect. I do think many are happy with the anti-smoking laws and expanded them in their own states. I do not agree with him on the gun law issue. That's because of the NY center of the world mentality.

Good example. Some element in LeFrak City a few weeks ago shot some guy in the lobby for rapping to his girl. So why should a law-abiding citizen not be allowed to keep a handgun because the least desirable elements of society are always doing stupid shit?
