She got this fiercely nasty phone call from a listener who said he requests it all the time. She had to explain that a friend dropped in with the record, it didn't belong to the station (oh for the days of blanket royalty fees! You could do things like that then.). I eventually recorded a cart for the station. Enjoy! |

That's musicians for ya ... wrong year. It was September of 1969. I pioneered a technique that few who weren't musicians could do - melodic overlapping segues where each new tune started over the previous one and carried the melody and beat in a new direction. I was always good at sets that you could barely tell where one tune ended and the next began with beat matching. |

That stupid banner was STILL hanging on the wall when I worked there? Studio was at 80 Riverside Drive (Riverside Hotel basement) and transmitter atop the Ritz Towers on 57th Street. We also had a studio to satisfy the FCC rules at 270 Henderson Street (an apartment building) in Jerky City, right around the corner from the Grove/Henderson PATH station entrance which was closed several years later. WHBI was the reason why I discovered PATH kin the first place given that I was often sent out there to do a show just to satisfy the "Jersey origination" requirement. :) |

You just HAD to bring grandma into it, didn't you? :(Dunno WHEN that picture was taken, but it was YEARS before 1972 when I was there. Zacherle and I didn't get along with her, long long story. Ghods forbid you snatched a record out of the rack that she pawed but didn't stick a note on and played it without HER permission. She's the reason old Scottso kept that Jack Daniels in his desk. Several bottles too. Some day I'll tell you some stories about that place ... between Jonathan Livingston Schwartz (the crybaby) and Dennis Elsas, it's a miracle that there were no "shots fired" in the hallway. Bunch of prima donnas, which is why Scottso would just lock himself in the studio or his office and didn't want to come out and play. Heh. |
