Phoenix is NOT a dump. It has its problems but so does every other city. The city government is actually pretty well managed, the economy here is picking up, the light rail system is being expanded and is quite nice, there are a number of top notch restaurants, and a ton of outdoor activities within a couple hours' drive.That being said, my girlfriend (soon to be fiance) is from Kansas City and I may end up moving out there. That was a place I expected to be a dump but after visiting it's an absolutely gorgeous city in the middle of the midwest. |

The downtown area is incredibly clean and safe, there is a lot of gentrification and infill development around central Mesa, Scottsdale, Tempe, and Phoenix. The light rail project has been more successful than many of the skeptics had thought (and now there is a rail link between downtown Tempe, downtown Phoenix, and the airport). ASU has really improved upon its party school reputation and has very highly regarded programs. The politicians are whacko (but the whacko element is actually losing ground). |

I've noticed that city governments run better when there is a mix of Republicans / Democrats in office (as compromises have to be made and the "ideological" issues that plague state / federal governments really don't apply to cities as much). There also are checks and balances over stupid ideas. Most of the cities in the Phoenix area have a pretty 50/50 (or close) split.Tucson is a horribly run city (with a local government that is almost 100% Democratic). Likewise, the one party rule in NYC and SF has made some people happy but has resulted in a lot of mis-management. |

I've advocated a different approach ... government should meet for ONE day a year. Hand each legislator one sheet of paper and one crayon. They can trade paper with others, but at the end of the day, teacher comes around and collects the papers and then burns them. Problem solved. :) |
