Elizabeth Warren claims that minimum wage ought to be $22 per hour

The Hollywood Gossip

$22 Minimum Wage: Sort of Proposed by Elizabeth Warren

by Hilton Hater at March 19, 2013 1:53 pm. Updated at March 19, 2013 1:53 pm.
Elizabeth Warren has proposed what some believe is a radical idea: a minimum wage hike up to $22 per hour.

The Massachusetts Senator is basing that figure on the minimum wage of 1960 and multiplying it by workers' gains in productivity over the last 50 years.

A a recent hearing of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, Warren inquired of the $7.25 current wage: why shouldn’t employees enjoy the benefits of such enhanced labor practices?

"What happened to the other $14.75?" she asked at the hearing. "It sure didn’t go to the worker."

Arindrajit Dube, an economist from the University of Massachusetts, backed Warren up and said those profits go into the pockets of corporate executives and they represent further proof of America's ever-increasing income inequality gap.

“It is quite remarkable that had the minimum wage kept up with overall productivity, it would have been $22 per hour in 2011,” Dr. Dube said. “Had it kept up with the growth in income going to the top 1 percent, it would have been even higher, at $24 per hour; and the wage would have exceeded $33 per hour at its peak in 2007.”

Neither Warren nor Dube are actually suggesting we implement such a huge minimum wage increase.

“Rather, the exercise demonstrates how different the growth rates have been for incomes going to those at the bottom of the labor market as compared to the economy as a whole and to those at the top end of the distribution,” Dube said.

Legislation has been introduced in the Senate that would bump up this wage to $10.10.

Sure, I can see that. Of course when a Wendy's Cobb Salad goes from $6.99 to $16.99, the guy from the Auto Dealership next door is going to need a raise so he can afford lunch. Now that new Honda Accord that cost $26,599 will have to go up to $32,999 and in the end, we've not accomplished a damn thing except inflation

Here's the fun part.

That wage will be taxed. Guess the spike in government revenues?

I don't feel like we're taxed less than in 1960 either, so 22 isn't nearly enough in reality. And the demand for chains and sneakers are higher now too.

A $22 minimum wage would bankrupt many corporations and lead to unemployment never seen in the United States, even at the height of the Depression (40-50 percent).

This is Warren's slick attempt to make a raise to $8 an hour seem not so bad.

It would be inflationary and terrible for the economy, and we all know it's not going to happen, but it would not be as inflationary as the example you gave before. You are saying that there is 10/14ths of an hour of minimum wage labor that goes into every Wendy's Cobb salad, and that is a major exaggeration.

None of these articles gives out the secret formula for where the 22x wage increase comes from.

So why not bump up everything else 22x from 1960, supply and demand ignored. Like 7 dollar gas, or $10.78 for a pound of apples and 10.78 for a gallon of milk. $4.40 for a hamburger. Even if it's no longer made or no one wants it, bump it 22x, and vice versa. So while the price for appliances like TV's have gone down, bump it 22 times!
$11,000 for a colour TV.

Of course none of these prices will match up with the other fees and costs and overhead. But fuzzy math is like that.
