Unfortunately the numbers do not lie: We're very nearly twice as fast, and that's with a maximum speed of just 40mph for almost half the line. As for safety, I really hate to gloat on this subject, but it was relatively recently that they had the first employee fatality while on duty and that is still something that weighs heavily on every other person at the corporation. |

We're classified by APTA and NTD as a rapid transit system, and the line was the model for BART and WMATA. It just happens that we're keeping the rapid in transit. |

A. #s are an average of the Red and Purple lines. Would be interesting to see them broken out like the WMATA lines, as the Red is much longer than the Purple, and has that long stretch under the Hollywood Hills between Hollywood/Highland and Universal City stations, where I suspect that the Bredas get close to their top allowed spped (70 mph, IIRC). I have to speculate about that, as that section had not yet opened the last time I was in L. A. (June 1999). |

IIRC that chart was from an entry on Greater Greater Washington and they just used the timetables to calculate speeds. Using wiki's 16.4 miles for the red line and 29 minutes from the timetable I get 33.9 mph for the red line. Using 6.4 miles and 13 minutes for the purple line I get 29.5 mph. They get 26.4 mph so either the timetables changed or our distances are different. They may have inadvertently been using the total track length (to the yard) which would lower the speed. Or maybe wiki is wrong.For the red line it's I once asked an operator how fast the trains went through the hills and he said about 65 mph. On a semi-related note I was traveling next to a green line train on the 105 east of the 710 and can confirm that they also travel at 65 mph. I've read where some people say 55 mph max, but I've been next to them several times when they were traveling 65 mph though sometimes they do only go 55 mph. |
