LOL @ "Conspiracies"

The airlines have been covering or painting over their logos on crashed airplanes for almost fifty years now. One of the things that did Pan Am in, was a crash (terrorism) in 1989. The airline had the very unfortunate bad luck to have the entire cockpit section of their 747 come down in Lockerbie, Scotland, almost completely intact. The undeniable Pan Am script, Clipper Maid Of the Seas, was photographed and broadcast all over the world. That image added insult to injury, and was cited as helping to accelerate the airline's demise.

Wherever possible, the airlines try to control the images coming out of crash scenes involving their aircraft, up to and including, painting the fuselage over.

Sometimes, however, an airline will milk a crash scene for all it's worth, as US Airways did when Sully made a successful ditching of his A320 in the Hudson River a few years ago.

See LuchAAA = attack

they did not paint over Continental in Buffalo.

they should not be allowed to touch the plane. investigators need every piece of evidence.

did you hear about the woman on jetBlue who threw a tantrum and the plane was diverted to Denver? if a man pulled that shit he would be charged with all kinds of shit.

Yes, I heard about that woman who flipped out because the crew relocated a passenger to an exit-row seat because the TV at his original seat was broken. She lost it because he "did not pay a premium fare" like she did. The woman was not arrested, because the male passenger and Jet Blue both declined to press charges. If either had wanted her locked up, she'd be in the hoosegow right now, on federal charges. Believe that.

See LuchAAA = ATTACK!!!!!!!!

Of course a male passenger would have had charges pressed against him for behaving like that.

Shows that jetBlue is a shit airline for not pressing charges. I've been saying that about them for a long time. They are a subway car with jet engines.

Definitely the first order of business once the emergency is over and any investigations are finished is to paint over the logo. Nothing at all new here.

I don't know much about this particular crash -- haven't been in the office in a few days -- but when I said the investigations are finished I meant more in the line of investigations that would indicate some reason not to allow the airline to paint over their name.

For example, if the landing gear collapsed when the plane touched down then there is no reason why you wouldn't let the airline paint over their name.

You think it's that simple? They should not be allowed to do anything to the plane until the investigation is complete, even if it's as "minor" as collapsed landing gear.

Someone should photoshop the logo on photos of the crash(can I call it a crash Dave? Chris from Patchogue?).

It was a custom font made just for Pan Am by a design office (forgot which one) in the mid 80's. I have a copy of the font set used to make the original artwork for making model decals "one day", plus the original artwork for the more famous names.

I'm also the guy who made the final paint scheme drawings for the fleet, based on Phil George Office designs. The last Pan Am paint scheme I did was a never painted 737-400 that was for Pam Am III (ex-Carnival operations) in the mid 90's. Now I see my blue ball logo on locomotives and freight cars.

The blue ball and the fuselage billboard logo for the final post 1987 schemes were digitized and I have those on 3.5" discs in my home files. The Clipper names I didn't get around to digitizing yet.

We made the stencils the old fashioned way, projected up on a drawing board to size, then traced on mylar and then pounced on the aircraft where the painter would hand brush it. The fuselage logos were laid out the same way and masked by hand, and beleive it or not, they used to use xacto blades to cut the masks out - which we later found out that the FAA had a freak out after the Hawaiian aircraft lost its top. The 747 masks were huge. In my paint paperwork I do today, there is a warning not to use metal scrapers or scoring with an xacto blade anywhere near a fuselage, wing, engine or door.

Nowadays, the artwork is all digital and I email it to a guy in Louisiana who cuts the masks by a big azz lazer printer/cutter, we can paint as many colors as we want using multiple layers registered to three points. Or as small as 3/16" high stencils for maintenance marks. Pretty cool.

Airbus still uses water slide decals for exterior maintenance markings!

I had an interesting conversation with a leading font designer about a similar subject. too bad I can't mention this post to him. Subchat is NOT somethning I'm proud of. As for nicks weakening metal, YOU'D BETTER BELIEVE IT. strip a copper wire with a knife. If you nick the wire and bend it it will invariably break at the nick.

Did all of Pan Am's fleet (The 727s of PAA's IGS fleet come to mind) use the same Clipper font, or were there variations for different aircraft types?
