I always felt that Democratic gerrymandering actually hurt their numbers in the House of Representatives. There are lots of districts which have been created to be overwhelmingly for a particular ethnic group, which then votes 90-10 to put a Democrat into the House. If you were to assume that the country was split 50-50, but then you take 10% of the districts and give them 90-10 Democrat margins, then the remaining 90% of districts will be starting from 54-46 deficits. Of course, that's a bit of an oversimplification, because the numbers aren't 50-50 (they vary up and down), and the remaining districts are gerrymandered to a degree as well. Still, creating districts where your candidate wins 90-10 on a regular basis always struck me as kind of dumb. |

Isn't that more the result of the Voting Rights Act than gerrymandering?I don't know. I'm really very much in the dark about how it all came about, other than to look at the outcome statistically and declare it silly. |

Very light blue. Most people think it's going back to the GOP. I still think Obama will win Florida for reasons I have pointed out.But why did you post this? No one is talking about the south anymore. All the focus is on the Midwest firewall. |
