Wouldn't Caribbean include parts of Mexico, Central, and South America?

While there are plenty of countries that touch the sea, for all intents and purposes, Caribbean ends up being a proxy for former Dutch, English, and French colonies along with the United States Virgin Islands, while former Spanish possessions are considered Hispanic/Latino. So somewhere like Belize and Guyana are culturally considered Caribbean (and they're both members of CARICOM), but the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico aren't despite being in the heart of the region.

As for the term West Indian, it tends to be more of an Anglophone reference, but you'll sometimes see older Haitians like my mother use it in English. It's still used as a descriptor in certain contexts, but it's has been subsumed by the term Caribbean in describing the region, and for some of us who who cringe at the word "African American", an important regional ethnic identifier.
