Obama would have been better off if he added one word to his rant: "alone ."

But there is more to it than that. I'm also a regular listener to NPR, and well before Obama's speech they were setting up the theory that those who do well (they were particularly talking about inventions) didn't do anything special; they were just lucky.

On topic to SubChat, you could say that of the electric streetcar. It was so obviously needed that many inventors worked on it. But Sprague made it technically and commercially viable in all kinds of conditions and all kinds of weather, and he proved it. This is why Sprague is the father of electric railways and rapid transit, not Siemens or Van Depoele.
