The New York Times Just Cut Me Off

Once you've read a certain number of articles per month, you now run into their pay wall. I've done that and now, when I try to read any story, or even their pearls of wisdom in their scintillating editorials, even from a Google link, I get a nag screen which takes me only to a page with my "options," all of which are 99 cents for the next 90 days, then $15 to $35 / 90 days after that.

You know, they have just appointed the Managing Director of the BBC Times CEO to revitalize their storied and moribund enterprise. This is because they are still losing advertisers, which hasn't been made up by their digital sales.

Righto, Mark Thompson of the BBC will become Times CEO and get a pay package estimated at up to $10.5 million and a signing bonus worth up to $4.5 million. This man, from a corporation funded out of the pockets of telly subscribers in GB will figure out how to get advertisers? Of will he just cut, like he did at the BBC, where he slashed jobs and benefits and moved staff from London to the north of England? Have you ever been to the north of England? It could have been worse: Siberia, or the Orkney Islands, or Albany.

I won't miss The Times. Someone turn the lights out when they close for good.
