There are two schools of thought at play here.

1.) The school that says "we're America damnit" and we should blindly be proud of EVERYTHING we do and not question anything.'

or

2.) The school that says America was an imperialistic power that now should atone for her past sins and work to improve our standing in the world view.

I think what we're seeing is more and more people are switching to the 2nd viewpoint which is frightening people who have the 1st viewpoint.
