If you look dispassionately at it I think you will find that it's not disproportionate or an anomaly when you look at other areas of society. The priests like other religious "leaders" are placed in positions of trust and esteem and to some the perceived power is an aphrodisiac, for want of a better word. But if you are realistic, you find roughly the same percentage of teachers who take advantage of their students, lawyers who take advantage of their clients, doctors who take advantage of their patients and even bosses who take advantage of employees. So yeah, there may be hundreds of Sandusky's in the Catholic Church but they are also in our hospitals, in our schools, in our courts, on our police forces and in the general public. |
