I think with Sodomy you have to look at another issue in the context of the time.

There weren't a whole lot of people in the world, and you didn't have all that many people in your tribal group. Look at how many of the mitzvot are aimed at family ties, and healthy families (e.g., the prohibition on sex with close relatives).

In the modern world we can't conceive of not having enough of a human population. In 1860 the entire population of the South was not much more than modern New York City, and in Biblical times there weren't that many people period. People who didn't procreate were considered quite useless in terms of family and therefore building up society. Much of the Bible is a very practical document, often obscured by endless interpretation.
