Why would they tell them that homosexuality is incompatible with team sports?Whole books have been written about the meme that homosexuality is incompatible with team sports, not leasdt because of the hypermasculine culture of sports, patrticularly in the professional arena. The 'locker-room culture' of organized sports teams perpetuates the hostile, anti-gay environment of many teams and leagues, such as the NFL. Oh, and coaches DO enforce the myth that homosexuality is incompatible with team sports. As just one example, here is the story of Penn State basketball coach Rene Portland, whose 'no drinking, no drugs, no lesbians' policy became the subject of a lawsuit and nationwide protests. Why do anti-gay attitudes persist in team sports? For all the reasons I listed above, plus the tacit acceptance anbd encouragement of it by the players, team officials, and the public. I await your usual word-humping reply. |
