The CERN neutrino experiment at OPERA was checked twice but that the data and results were released so that other labs can pour over it and also try to reproduce the results. They also continued to retest and check EVERYTHING to ensure that it was indeed correct. In Physics there is a Sigma level system in order for something to be a discovery.

In this case they have NOT said that this is indeed the long sought Higgs-Boson or a God Particle but something that MIGHT be it, they still have a lot more tests to run and fermilabs data is still being poured over. This is a HEAVY particle at 125 billion electron volts. They still have to conduct tests to see how the particle acts, and any SLIGHTTTTTT variation in how this particle acts or what it does and how it does it will derail the Standard Model or simply set off a new field of physics, so it could be the end of things where the universe is nice and elegant like the way Einstein always wanted it. Or it could be the rabbit hole that leads to a realm of reality that we have no understanding or grasp of. Either way this is very exciting.
