"Pure liberal." That's a vivid concept actually. I grew up as a liberal-cum-socialist, and I would say that liberalism as I understood it has changed at least as much as I have.

Libertarians call themselves classic liberals and I see their point. To me Hubert Humphrey was a classic liberal. So was Jefferson. Some politicians who style themselves liberals or progressive these days would be unrecognizable to Jefferson or Humphrey.

Going the other way, changing times haven't induced me to believe Joe McCarthy was anything but the pond scum I thought he was 60 years ago.

I'm neither doubting you nor ridiculing you for calling yourself a pure liberal, I'm just saying that isn't as simple a designation as it may be seemed in the past.
