My experience is that typically you "round up" for good service, rather than an American style percentage tip. So for a lunch of 32-and-change-Euros with good service you would give them 35 and everyone is happy.

It is a bit more delicate where credit cards are involved, as almost all credit cards here are done by PIN and not by signature on a piece of paper (where you would write in the tip), so you don't always have the ability to leave a tip. In those cases you would give something close to the equivalent of "rounding up" in cash.

This is the case in Switzerland as well as in the German-speaking part of Italy.

I'm sure SMAZ will fill us in if customs are different in Rome. Then we'll know if Mr. Zuckerberg did not follow the timeless advice of "When in Rome..."
