There are also 11,000 citations in Google to "Bosnian massacre" Srebrenica.People aren't careful. How many of those are by US Presidents? My take on all this -- this was a clear fk-up by President Obama and his speechwriters and I seems that they have been a little weak in saying so, instead saying that the President "misspoke" and expressing "regret". If the people of Poland are truly offended (and I can't bother to sort through all the headlines to figure out if they are or whether it is just partisan "gotcha" noise), then the right course of action is clearly to say "Hey, I screwed up. My writers got it wrong and I didn't proofread things as thoroughly as I should have. Poland is a great ally of the US and we would never want to offend you. Please accept my apologies." Then it's done. Owning your mistakes and making things right is a sign of strength and never a sign of weakness. |
