The big difference between biking to school versus using athletic facilities is that the former frees up your time for other things. And for the off chance of injury, they decide to push impressionable young minds towards habits that perpetuate the obesity problem (ie: driving a half mile when you're not transporting goods). Also, I think biking to school helps promote independence, a quality that seems to be sorely lacking in suburban environments. You can see it when they get to college, dummies who couldn't find their way out of a paper bag without a chauffeur perplexed on how to get to the mall. So yeah, that school sucks. The invisible hand of the "free market" is probably powerless here... if there are other schools in the area I suspect they wouldn't be close enough to bike to, at least for those 50 students who go fucked over. |
