It's a fundamental disconnect between two broadly prevailing mindsets in this country.One is the older mindset of staunch individualism and self-reliance. One should succeed on only one's hard work, and if one does not, one shouldn't expect to get ahead. The problem with this view is that it doesn't take into consideration those who aren't as fortunate in this pure "meritocracy": they die off in large numbers just as they did in times past. The other view is that as we are all one nation we should all look out for one another and be ready to lend a helping in hand in should one of us be in need. There is a safety net in place to help catch one when one falls. The problem with this view is that it is vulnerable to those who drain the system without contributing. Those two views are deeply ingrained and are intractable, and probably won't go away any time soon. Obama did what he did to appeal to his base, who come from the latter group. Inevitably anything he does to move closer to the latter group is going to move him away from the former group. It is the nature of the beast. |
