Just gauge the reactions. No Democrat who has held Obama's position has followed his "evolving" and they are terrified at doing so. There's been (muted, but for them, pretty unprecedented) pushback from black churches on the issue. Every single swing state that is currently a literal tossup right now has passed some form of restriction on same sex marriage. When you remove large bastions of socially liberal urban voters from the population, support for same sex unions drops dramatically.

Barack Obama was forced by his base to move left because his need for money is greater than the potential risk of losing voters. This is not the action of a confident man who expects to win re-election. It's proof he knows he can lose and, if things don't change much, probably will.
