What I mean by muddled is that a priest, rabbi, imam, etc CAN marry two people. (A marriage conducted by a ship's captain is the equivalent to a civil ceremony on land... but much cooler!) In parts of Europe you MUST go to a court/city hall (or equivalent) and have a civil ceremony for any union to be considered legal. A religious ceremony may or may not follow.I agree the whole "domestic partnership" think is an undefinable mess. The entire issue revolves around the legal aspects of marriage, next-of-kin, ownership, tax and survivorship rights. |
