It's not a flip-flop at all. The biggest shift was what he is calling what he's in favor of.In other parts of the world, religious marriage ceremonies are not (or no longer) recognized as marriages. In those countries, a couple must go to a courthouse to obtain a legal marriage. Over here it's still muddled. However, since it is possible to go to a courthouse (sic) and get married, it is possible to legislate the same distinction and have fully legally recognized marriage between 2 adult Americans. What it's called shouldn't matter. Either it's legal unions for all (along with needing to rework a slew of laws) or just call it marriage for all. DOMA's time is over. |
