The Democrats (well the hard leftist ones anyway) proceeded to harp and jump on, and make a huge ordeal out of it. It made Santorum look like a lunatic. If they were smart, they would have saved their ammo for if he was chosen. They let fire their ammo pointing out the more moderate candidate, at a time when Santorum had a good chance of winning the primaries. By making such a huge deal out of issues during a time when it really was none of their concern, helped hugely in getting rid of Sandorum, the far weaker candidate against Obama.
