I don't have to drive a car if I don't want to. Why should I be required to carry a gun?Because unlike driving, self-defense is both individual and collective and a failure of collective defense affects others. When riots breaks out and your neighborhood is breaking down and the police or the Guard cannot get there in time (or high-tailed it), who will save your family and property and those of your neighbors and loved ones? Somebody else? The Canadians? The Bahamians? Just like with the health care mandate, the passing off of collective defense to others is not only freeloading but also brings real and immediate costs to the wider community when things break down. Defense starts with the individual. I might shoot myself in the foot when I'm not paying full attention. I make enough mistakes when I drive a car (as does everyone else), You'll learn to pay attention just like when you drive. The first time you drove you probably also thought you'd get in a wreck. but cars are a lot more forgiving than guns. Statistics would disagree with that statement. If everyone carried a gun all the time, you'd have hundreds of accidental deaths and thousands of accidental injuries each year. Nobody would be compelled to carry weapons on them at all times under my proposal unless in a duly declared emergency called by an approved official (a mayor, governor, etc) |
