Rmoney, Sanctorum, and Ging-rich are very nearly the embodiment of the three elements of the Republican's Nixon/Reagan/Rove coalitions. Those of course being the financier, the proslytizer, and the lobbyist. Each group has their demands, many of which are mutually exclusive of the other groups'. Other Republican candidates in years past have at least covered two or more of their constituent groups, but this year the closest they have is trailing a distant third. This year's vicious primary battle is simply the final collapse of the coalition which allowed them to hold sway over so much of the electorate for years.

Even if the primary does not go into the convention a sizeable fraction of the 20 to 30 percent of the nation normally counted on as loyal Republican voters, likely the right wing Christian fundamentalists Sanctorum appeals to, may well stay home on election day. That is of course unless Sanctorum decides to run as a third party candidate. It's possible the VP nomination may get some voters out, but we saw how well that worked in 2008.
