He's talking about how his parents impacted his behavior by "impress[ing] upon [him] the importance of studying and learning," which is total rubbish.

Hardly. Considering that your parents are pretty much your first role models, if they valued athletic achievement over "book larnin'", chances are you're not going to put as much focus on the academic side of your schooling. You would be valuing athletics, even if your talent isn't that great.
