Are these prep schools actual grade schools, or just after-school and summer programs for gifted kids and kids who just want an edge?

I have not made inquiries. My impression is that most of them are after-school and summer enrichment programs.

Another reason you may find the streets to be relatively empty of kids in the summer is because so many are at the nearby Parks and Rec center on College Point.

There is only one nearby park. It is not particularly heavily utilized. The basis for my comparison for playing NYC street games is when the area was not mostly Asian.
