Locking a cockpit door doesn't prevent an explosive-laden suicide bomber like a Richard Reid or the Underwear Guy.Bringing down a single plane and all its occupants was a calculable risk that governments, airline companies and their bankers and passengers were willing to take; e.g. Lockerbie. What 9/11 taught was that bringing down a single plane was able to take more lives and property than just the plane. That cost was incalculable and needed to be addressed. Closing the cockpit door essentially eliminated that risk. The rest of the airline boarding routine is fluff. |
