Ability. Honestly, in college football, where people play for religious institutions, religion isn't really an issue.

To me, Tebow became such a big issue to sports fans when Denver selected him in the 1st round, while most scouts figured he would be 3rd to 4th round pick. While there certainly was a lot of chatter surrounding Tebow BEFORE he was selected, and some of it certainly did relate to Tebow's off-field issues, Cam Newton was no different before this season, for completely different issues (including one scathing report by a well regarded scout in which he was called "disingenuous" and it was said he "has a fake smile"). The reason we don't hear Newton talked about so much is because he has had an absolute monster of a season. Tebow, win-loss record aside, has played somewhat poorly at times (while playing well at other times).

I think, when it comes to the media, you would find criticisms of Tebow to be much more measured. But because, outside of politics, religion is the most polarizing topic on this board, people are taking extreme stances regarding young Timothy.
