In my lifetime, I can remember only one president who actually could be credited with turning around chauvinistically anti-American feelings: that was JFK. It was probably partly because of his personality and presentation. It was certainly because the gloom of The Cold War seemed to lift. It was the first real respite from the continual stress of the Depression, WWII, Korea, and the nuclear tension of the Cold War 50s. Rock n Roll notwithstanding, the 50s were not a particularly pleasant time.The anti-US world was hoping Obama would do their bidding; when that didn't turn out as good as they hoped, their anti-US feeling just kept rolling along. |
