Many of the major European Universities were founded before 1517.What encouraged people to read their own bibles was not Martin Luther but Johannes Gutenberg. Before that, books were too expensive for peasants to have. And it took until much later than the Protestant Reformation for literacy to actually become widespread. Enlightenment was in the 18th century, not 16th. |
