Posted by Concourse Express on Thu Dec 15 21:22:19 2011, in response to Re: ARTICLE: Census shows 1 in 2 people are poor or low-income, posted by Chris R16/R2730 on Thu Dec 15 20:43:52 2011. The thing is, the poverty line for a family of four is $22,350, which would place the maximum threshold for "low income" (199% of the poverty line) at $44,476.50. At best, such income would be the so-called "lower middle class," but once you consider the stats cited by the article...Bottom 20% avg income: ~$15,000 (way under the poverty line) Next 20% avg income ~$37,000 (WORKING class, not middle class) ...you see that the middle class really is shrinking. That annual incomes for the poor dropped while the top 5% saw earnings rise by 64% over the past 30+ years further exemplifies the problem. my (semi-revived) blog |
