The thing is, the poverty line for a family of four is $22,350, which would place the maximum threshold for "low income" (199% of the poverty line) at $44,476.50. At best, such income would be the so-called "lower middle class," but once you consider the stats cited by the article...

Bottom 20% avg income: ~$15,000 (way under the poverty line)
Next 20% avg income ~$37,000 (WORKING class, not middle class)

...you see that the middle class really is shrinking. That annual incomes for the poor dropped while the top 5% saw earnings rise by 64% over the past 30+ years further exemplifies the problem.
