Politicians tend to get religion quickly when they see their colleagues booted out of office for messing with those programs.Why do you think they opposed them in the first place? Same with Obamacare which will become another sacred cow. The GOP can't even bring itself to allow a year to go by without doing the Medicare "doc fix" even though they were the ones who insisted on those cuts in the 90's. Never implemented except for the first couple of years. They went out the window once Bush was installed. None of their proposed cuts are to be taken seriously. It's why we need either a default or a downgrading. At that point, politicians would have to make real decisions and I can assure you that it's not gonna be Medicare that goes. people still vote. Even Teabaggers have said in recent polls that there will be hell to pay if "government puts its hands on their Medicare". The only thing GOP politicos care more than their ideology is their jobs. |
