The wording in the Bible is vague and open to interpretation. But in the 16th century Catholic church, there was no such thing as interpretation. Only the papacy had that power, and the papacy had been insisting for over a thousand years (since the council of Nicea) that the Aristotle view of the universe was absolute fact. They adopted the Aristotle view because it boosted their legitimacy. Stars and planets were moved by angels. The Aristotle view put the Earth at the center, elevating humanity to the top of the list of God's list of creations. The world was different in the early 1600's, and so was the Church. It was dealing with over a century of battles with Protestants and was definitely on the defensive. ANY threat to it's divinely ordained power on Earth was reacted to with extreme measures. |
