Carter's ineptitude was in how he handled the many problems which popped up after 1977. Ridiculously high inflation, interest rates thru the roof, an aggressive Soviet Union which invaded Afghanistan in 1979 and his seemingly impotent response(s) to the Iranian hostage crisis. He brought the wrath of many of the moderates/conservatives in his own party when he cancelled the B1 bomber, yet enraged the liberal wing when he boycotted the 1980 Olympics in Moscow. In the 1980 elections, liberals stayed home, the centrists and conservatives voted for Reagan. Carter's disastrous presidency began the process of turning the deep south into the bastion of Republican strength it is today. |
