Taxes are not higher in Europe than here. They are structured differently. The US is federated. Most European countries are centralized meaning national tax rates may be higher than the US federal ones but local taxes are low or non-existent. The gross total of government spending per capita in most European countries is only slightly higher than in the US. The main difference is that instead of spending it on stuff like defense, they spend it on pre-K education, higher education, maternity leave and health care. When you sum up Americans spending on taxes at all levels, employer/employee health insurance premiums and out of pocket expenses, higher education costs and child care, the average American is spending much more, has less saved up and with nothing to show for it. |
