I don't believe that Murtha's ideas are correct but you really cannot argue his patriotism or his past honerable military service. Even relaying someone else's reference to cowardice was in poor taste. However, telling the enemy that you will withdraw by a given date is the equivalent to posting that the alarm on the bank vault will be switched off from 2 AM to 3 AM for maintenance.The fact is that no wartime president has ever enjoyed any significant popularity. It goes with the territory. Saying what is popular (ala Murtha) may get you carried on the shoulders of the masses but it does little to protect us from the realities of the world. |
