Public transportation--which I use every day because my eyesight won't support driving--in NYC isn't nealy as "bad" as you make it out to be. I've been in cities (Henderson, NV ocomes readily to mind) where there is poor or no public transport. You have to have a car in places like that. Otherwise, you're a prisoner in your own home.The thing about high gas prices is, there are a LOT of Americans who live in such areas where car ownership is a must. (Sure, you can own a bike in a place like Henderson, but you sure as hell aren't riding it anywhere during the day in summer--believe that!) If you live in a development where the nearest supermarket is in a shopping plaza five miles from your house, and your jub is fifty miles away in another area code, well, too bad if gasoline gets more expensive, along with everything else.
