They used to say a liberal is a conservative who's not been mugged yet. The same holds true for middle class blacks. Hurt them in their pockets bad enough and the stylish idea of having a black man as president is trumped by the better idea of having a competent man in the white house.Case in point: I have a friend in the Albany area who happens to be black. When obama was elected she said to me; "Can't you be happy for me?" She's middle class ex-civil servant and her 4 children are all college grads. Eldest is a lawyer, one daughter is getting her PHD next month. A true middle class family. Well last year her son got married and moved to Boston. His wife is now 4 months pregnant and he broke the news to her that he's just been layed off (2 weeks ago) because of cutbacks. Just happens to be a field that has been hurt very badly by obama's economic policy. I think she's now leaning a bit to the right right now - looking ahead to 2012. I promised her no "I told you so!" |
