A couple of insights here: obviously, the things that makes us human and separates us from all other forms of life are our ability to think, feel, reflect, and reason. But it's not like we can have a brain meter to monitor awareness or cognition, however rudimentary, so we have to choose a cut-off point, one necessarily arbitrary, even if guided by fact -- no different than setting the driving age to 16 or the voting age to 18 -- even though surely some individuals on either side of the cut-off should not be where they are. This is what we have done with abortion, and additional legal considerations, such as viability, etc... come into play. But any definition of life (sentient life) is going to be fuzzy, and we need to understand the limitations due to this. |
